7 Things About Small Double Buggy You'll Kick Yourself For Not Knowing

A Small Double Buggy That's Easy to Push One-Handed and Carry Up and Down Stairs

If you're looking for a lightweight double stroller that you can push one-handed and take up and down stairs, this is the one.

It has two fixed seats with up to 30 different seating configurations are possible (including an angular one!). Both seats have UPF 50+ canopies with windows that peek out.

Size

The Joovy Kooper X2 is a side-by-side double stroller which can hold two children up to 50 lbs each. The seats are larger bigger than those of other lightweight double strollers, and the canopies have nice-sized SPF 50 sunshades with windows that are peekaboo. Other features that are important include cup holders for one parent and an enormous, self-standing basket that can hold up to 25 lbs; swing-away bars for children to climb into and out of their seats and the front wheels that swivel lock to make it easier to maneuver on difficult terrain. It is a great choice for urban and suburban families. It is also newborn ready with a double kit that includes a newborn wedgie for an optimum lie-flat position.

Weight

The weight of double buggie will determine its ability to push. A light buggy is easier to lift and carry, but might not have enough suspension to withstand bumps and uneven terrain.

Make sure to read the specifications of each model carefully before purchasing. Some double buggies come with a maximum seat weight and others have a frame limit. Some models fold with the seats removed to make them even smaller and lighter and compact, which is a great option when storage space is at an all-time low.

The tri-fold doubles are generally the lightest models as only one hand is needed to lift the front and back sections. They're also a bit smaller than side-byside buggies, making them a good choice for fitting through doors. The iCandy Geo 3 tri-fold double is one of lighter models available. It can comfortably fit twins, or a toddler and baby.

Tandem buggies are great for families that are growing because they start as a single stroller but can be adapted to include a second child, car seat or carrycot. Some, such as the iCandy Orange offer over 30 different seating options, so they can grow along with your family, as high as a 3rd child. They tend to be heavier than tri-fold doubles. However, they're often easier to maneuver between kerbs due to the weight being more evenly distributed.

Folding

The most effective double buggies for young children can fold up in just a few seconds. This feature is adored by our Lab experts because it allows them to fit the buggies into the back of their cars and save space when they're not in use. The Joovy Kooper X2 for example includes straps that can be pulled up on each seat and the whole thing folds down. Even our oldest testers could do this tri-fold with just one hand.

The lightweight Delta Children LX Side by Side is another good choice for a small double buggie. Its light weight is a plus, but its main features are such as large pop-out canopies that have SPF 50 and peekaboo windows, swing-away bars to help children get in and out of the seats; and reclined seating and leg rests for younger kids.

Manoeuvrability

When selecting a compact double stroller, it is important to consider its maneuverability.  Get the facts  includes the ease for both children to be able to ride in the buggy. Some pushchairs are more efficient than others in this regard, including the iCandy Orange's "cinema chair" (where the back is elevated).

This is where narrow tandem buggies and side-by-side designs can be useful. However, these can be slightly longer overall, and therefore could be tricky to navigate through doors.

The UPPAbaby Vista 2 is an excellent example of this, as it's a relatively small pushchair that allows two seats to be added and an important feature - the 'piggyback' board which can carry an additional child.

Other smaller, three-wheeled models, like the phil&teds Dot, are also incredibly agile. This is especially the case with its clever "dot kit" that transforms it into an inline buggie. It has different seating configurations for kids of varying ages and even allows the front seat to rotate to face the parents for optimum face-to-face bonding. It also comes with a fantastic storage basket and is super-easy to fold. A great choice for families that are growing!

Comfort

With narrow tandem strollers or versatile side-by-side buggies parents can monitor both kids at the park, grocery store or anywhere else. These lightweight doubles can accommodate two children up to 50 pounds per seat and come with large pop-out canopy that extends far enough to offer real shade, with windows that peek out and padded leg rests for children to kick back and relax. The doubles come with cups for both parents and a an reversible cupholder that is located on the back of the seat. They also come with a large underseat storage basket.

If you're starting out with a growing family, you can add the double kit from phil&teds to your dot buggy to transform it into an inline double ideal for toddlers and newborns alike. The innovative 3-wheel design allows for easy kerb popping and superior maneuverability, while the sling seat is the perfect opportunity for babies to bond with their parents. You can easily swap out the sling seat for an infant car adapter as your children get older. You're ready to go on your next adventure, with a luxury travel bag and rain cover!
